Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?

Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?

Release Date: April 24 2005

Less than three months after their record-breaking debut album release, Arctic Monkeys had fans relishing the release of a new EP which would consist of four brand new songs and be led by the track 'The View From The Afternoon'. Included in the EP was a remake of old demo and fan favourite 'Cigarette Smoke', renamed to 'Cigarette Smoker Fiona' with a new sound and changed lyrics. This preceded unusually slower songs 'Despair in The Desparture Lounge' and an almost George Formby-like 'No Buses' which did not fail to show the diversity of the band. However, it was the final track on the EP that had people yearning for its release date. 'Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?' was all about being in the band from Alex Turner's point of view, mainly focusing on the "backlash" since the band's sudden rise to fame, managing to show disappointment at fans and at the same time plea with those good enough to stay loyal. Releasing the record as an EP meant that it was not eligible for the UK charts, and following the previous 100% record of singles entering at number one, likewise the album, one would only assume the EP would enter straight in at the top of the pops. Many interpreted this as deliberate behaviour by the band and going back to the track 'Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?' Turner explains "Don't care if it's marketing suicide". Marketing suicide my arse.
